Chapter 3

Doug was woken by a knock on his driver’s window, and he sat up with a start. He turned to see officer Daniel Smith peering through the glass at him. He blinked once and then rubbed his eyes to get the tiredness out of them. It was daylight, and the storm had passed. The sky above him was a bright blue with a tint of white fluffy clouds. With the sun shining brightly through his windscreen, it looked set to be a nice day.

Doug ran a hand through his hair, feeling slightly giddy and somewhat hungover as if he had been out on all night bender. It did not register with him that his missing officer was staring through the glass window until it finally clicked and he shrank back in utter surprise.

"Open up!" demanded Officer Smith. "I'm okay! It’s not a dream, honest!"

Holstering his gun, he opened the door to his patrol car and stepped outside into the warm morning air. He checked his watch. It was 10.30am. He had no idea how long he had been asleep but last night’s events were still etched in his memory.

"Smith? How did...I thought I lost you?" said a confused Doug. "But how...W-what h-happened?"

He looked at tall, black guy carefully, noticing the bruising on his face and his dirtied uniform. Like Doug, it looked as if he had been dragged through the whole building, kicking and screaming.

"It's a long story," he said to Doug. "But you won't believe what I found. I think we cracked this case".

"You found the Haines kid?" said Doug, his hopes lifting up a notch.

"You better follow back in and see this," said an excited Smith. "It will all become clear".

Doug frowned at this. He felt reluctant to go back into the building. Especially after what he had seen the other night. But the reappearance of his missing officer had him curious and with it being daylight, the darkness inside the building would not be so bad.

Taking out the flashlight from the car. He followed Smith back inside.

"What the hell?!" was Doug’s reaction when Smith showed him the body on the floor.

It was dressed in ragged overalls and wore what looked like some Halloween mask, one that looked homemade. It almost looked like a scarecrows mask, and at first he assumed it was the creature he had encountered last night, but on closer inspection of the body, he noticed the gunshot wounds to the chest and the blood that had seeped through its clothing and onto the dusty marble floor of the corridor.

"That don't look like no creature," commented Smith. "Look more like a man to me".

Curiously, Doug reached forwards and removed the scary mask from the body. The face revealed beneath it shocked both Doug and Smith and detective Doug almost fell backwards from what he saw.

"Commissioner Eldritch?" he said in complete surprise at the dead face looking up at him.

It was his boss, and what he was doing here in this place of all places was a mystery to Doug, but he knew all would be revealed if he investigated a little further.
